Frequently Asked Questions

Cosplay

Q: What is cosplay?

The word 'cosplay' is an amalgamation of the words 'costume' and 'play'. Originating from Japan, it means the hobby of making and wearing costumes based on characters from anime, video games, films or comics. Costumes are usually worn at special events such as conventions or photoshoots.

Q: Do I have to wear a costume to attend?

No, we welcome all kinds of fashion – the only rule is no jeans or trainers. People wear all sorts of styles at the ball including Gothic, Lolita and Steampunk, as well as regular party dresses and suits.

Q: I want to go as character X. Will it be allowed at the ball?

As long as it doesn’t include jeans or trainers, and you look reasonably presentable, we don’t mind which kind of costume you wear. It’s OK to wear trainers if they're covered (for example with animal feet or boot covers).

Q: Can I get changed at the venue?

There are no changing rooms at the venue, but you can get changed in the toilets. However, space is limited so it's usually better to arrive already changed. The Slug and Lettuce pub across the road has clean, spacious toilets too.

Q: Can I bring a sword/gun with my costume?

No way. Nada. NO. Even if it's an obvious fake, if the bouncers catch you with it, you may be escorted from the event without refund, and the police may be called.

Q: How do I get to the train station from the venue?

The Clapham Grand is literally right in front of Clapham Grand tube station. If you come out of the correct exit (St. John's Hill) it will be very hard to miss!

Q: Why is your event for over-18s only?

As a nightclub which serves alcohol, the Clapham Grand does not allow under-18's in the venue. The police do spot checks all the time, and the Clapham Grand would be are at risk of losing their license if underage drinkers were found in the venue.

Q: I'm over 18 but I don't have ID / don't want to bring it with me...

Please remember to bring your ID! It is the venue who check ID, not us. It must be a driving license, passport, or European ID card.

Q: Will there be tickets sold on the door?

Yes, there will be tickets available to buy on the door. Alternatively, you may mail order your tickets from the Tickets page until November 22nd, or buy them in person from Tokyo Toys store in Picadilly Circus.
